I am a parent of a 14 and 16 year old. I know that they have friends who may experiment with using over-the-counter drugs. In your opinion which are the most common prescription type drugs for us to be concerned about?

Hey,
Sorry for the delayed response!
The most commonly abused prescription drugs are opioids (pain killers), stimulants (ADHD medication), sedatives, and over the counter cough medicine.
Opioids: Codeine is one of the more commonly abused opioids. When abused it is usually mixed with Sprite. Some street names include: Syrup, Lean, Purple drank. Other examples of opioids include: Dilaudid, Vicodin, Demerol, Percocet, and OxyContin. Taking these medications not as prescribed can result in drowsiness, confusion, slowed breathing, and death.
Sedatives: Examples of sedatives include: Nembutal/Pentobarbital, Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Lunesta, and Ambien. Taking these medications can result in drowsiness, slurred speech, confusion, low blood pressure, slowed breathing, and death These medications are sometimes used as date rape drugs.
Stimulants: Examples of stimulants include: Adderall, Concerta, and Ritalin. Taking these medications can result in increased alertness, irregular heart beat, dangerously high body temperature, and heart failure.
OTC Cough syrup: These meds of abuse contain dextromethorphan, DM. Street names include: Triple C, Robo, and Robotripping. Taking these medications can result in slurred speech, temperature; numbness; dizziness; nausea; vomiting; and confusion.
I hope this is helpful. Thank you for your question.
